Moving JCR elections
Michael is proposing to move elections from Michaelmas to Hilary. He explains that terms would end at the start of Hilary, instead of at the end of Michaelmas as they do under the status quo. Michael wants to bring this up proposal bringing it to a GM. He argues freshers would be more likely to put themselves forward, and more likely to vote as they would know people standing for elections better. Further, it wouldn’t dissuade second years from standing because they would finish no later than the middle of Hilary of their third year, and so their finals wouldn’t be hugely affected.
Dan Rastelli (the IT officer) says he needed the time over the vac between Michaelmas and Hilary after being elected to work out how things worked and doesn’t think that the hand over would be pleasant if it was done in the middle of Hilary term. In response, Thomas Laver expresses his view that having someone around in college who previously held the role to directly talk to makes for a smoother handover.
Leyla agrees with Michael and mentions that she didn’t stand until Hilary when she was co-opted because she wasn’t confident enough to run in Michaelmas since it was only her first term at Oxford. Bruno and Rory also agree, as they didn’t have much of a perspective as to what entz does before they ran for it.
Divestment and College exec
A motion is going to college exec very soon and will definitely pass. The college fund manager is coming to talk to anyone from the JCR who wants to attend the meeting about divestment. Michael will also mention subject societies.
Freshers’ week
Tom reminds people on committee that they will be needed to help out with a variety of things. Everyone will be needed from the Monday of Freshers’ week.
Partially funding alumni’s record label event
There’s an alumni who is a musician who’s starting his record label. He’s playing in college and having a panel with people in the music industry. He wants us to pay for his food, accommodation and travel. A motion isn’t brought on this.
