Disabilities

The Equalities Act 2010 defines disability as 'a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on the ability to carry out normal day to day activities'. If you are encountering any barriers to living a full and independent life at Oxford because of a physical condition, learning disability or mental health condition, then we're here to help!

Balliol is definitely one of the most friendly and tolerant colleges within the university and is constantly striving to cater for all members of the college, and is very much involved in raising awareness of learning, physical and mental disabilities, both within the college and across the university as a whole. An important part within Balliol’s welfare provisions is the support for disabled students. The college has a large focus on individual wellbeing, with a port of call for every need, either within the JCR committee itself or the wider collegiate facilities. Members of the JCR Committee can help with putting you in contact with the right services, and liaising with College, and the college can provide reimbursement for medical related expenses, other financial aid and counselling. The Disability Advisory Service is a university wide service that provides a great deal support for disabled students in many different forms, tailoring their input into your life to meet your individual needs. We can do our best to put you in touch with the right people there so that you get the provisions you require.

If you would like any help accessing services or adaptations, including special exam arrangements, or if you'd just like a general chat about disability, we would be more than happy to help you out in any way we can. Whether you need to talk some things through, or you need to be pointed in the right directions to the appropriate resources or services, feel free to get in touch with the Disabled Students' Officer using the contact form, and we'll do our best to help. If you would rather speak with someone outside of College, then the University's Disability Advisory Service are extremely helpful. They can be contacted on 01865 280459 or by email at disability@admin.ox.ac.uk.

If you are thinking of applying, or have any concerns regarding disability at Balliol, or in fact any other issues you may have, please email us and we'll do the best we can to help you, or put you through to the right people in College. Feel free to ask any questions either via email or at the open day - we’re ready to answer them.
