    Minutes

    1. Matters Arising
      • ML said that he would be in college in the Easter vac and would send out emails to ignite his reform of the TV room.
      • Denise has purchased a box that we can put money in for the JCR taxi fund. Caitlin has no idea how this box is planning on working, and the box’s whereabouts is unknown. DT said that various other college’s had a College taxi company who you could use with a tab system and would be battled for.
    2. Oxford Left Review [Xavier]
      • XC showed us a copy of the OLR. Copies are ÂŁ2.50 each. He would like it to appear in the JCR as a small trial run, with the possibility of bringing it to a GM as a permanent subscription. CT said that 4 copies of a magazine are likely to be cleared away after one day from the JCR. KH said that not a lot of money should be passed for this because it could be controversial in a GM. XC suggested ten copies for ÂŁ25. The money was passed to come out of general funds.
    3. Dynamic Rent Pricing System [Anna Hufton]
      • AH explained that they had done the dynamic rent pricing system for this year’s room choosing. If anyone wants to see the figures AH has them. CT pointed out that if no one chose the room at all because it was too expensive, the price would remain the same. AH said that she thought a room would be unlikely to be chosen high up, and then not be chosen at all the following year, because the price can only change by ÂŁ40 a year.
    4. JCR Chairs [Krista]
      • KH said that the area near pantry in the JCR should have more chairs. CW said that some might end up in the TV room. MD and DT will look into the cost of more chairs.
    5. Bop Cleanup [Krista]
      • KH said that she wanted to make bop clean-up better, and she would like to reduce the number of people on each shift. She has realised that the fundamental problem is that people are often not in a suitable state to be on bop clean-up. GW said that smaller groups might make people more accountable.
      • CW said that maybe people on bop clean-up should maybe not get absolutely hammered. CF put forward the idea that people could sign up to a bop clean-up. AH thinks bop clean-up is “really fun”. DBL said that either him or Mat or Max had to be there to deal with pantry. DT proposed a trial period of smaller groups, so that this committee will only have to do one more bop each.
    6. Teach First [Dan Turner]
      • DT has met with Teach First about supporting the organisation in Balliol. He wants to know anything that we could or might do to support teach first. GW suggested inviting them to do talks in Balliol. SB said that there were a wide range of presentations that Teach First offered.
      • CW said that she thought that Teach First were already a big presence in Oxford so she wasn’t sure how necessary it was for them to come directly to Balliol, especially as Balliol offers a teach first scholarship and a handful of Balliol graduates went into Teach First last year. XC raised the possibility that we don’t like teach first.
      • CF said that there was a lot of controversy surrounding the scheme because it attracted graduates by going straight into a job. Also other university graduates might resent the assumption that being a top graduate will make you be a good teacher. CW pointed out that the number of schools of the Teach First waiting list is growing, and that many graduates don’t take the option to leave after two years. DT also said that they were a well-funded charity who it might good to keep on side.
    7. AOB
      • I raised food at GMs. It seems that pizza might not be that popular. ML said that some people might not want to pay for GM food if they weren’t coming to the GM. IR disagrees with providing a lot of food at GM, because we shouldn’t incentivise people to come to GMs. DT pointed out that a large bunch of people who were hanging around until the pizza came. RM pointed out that it would be difficult for food to arise mid-motion. CB said there could be a problem with being seen as overly miserly if there wasn’t enough food. CT said that if people weren’t interested enough to stay post-food that was a different problem. RM said that it might be good to give the budget to Pantry to spend. AS asked if there was possibility of doing huge pizzas that a group of friend could share. CW said that sometimes groups of people at the other end of the JCR not taking part in the GM could be quite distracting. RM said there were two issues: should we provide food, and what should we provide. DT said that I could maybe do a survey of GM food.
      • CT said that James Atkinson now has a job and is no longer willing to make furniture for the JCR.
      • RM said that he needed people to reply to his emails about the website.
      • DBL said that people were keen to have a water dispenser in pantry, but he was less keen because of cost and environmental issues.
      • DT said there will be a talk in the MCR on Sunday by the MCR LGBTQ issues on trans-sensitivity. It would be great if we all go.
