    Minutes

    Matters Arising:

    1. Website feedback [Dan Turner]

DT asked if anyone had feedback for the website. We agreed it was great. CF suggested more pictures of people and places.

    Agenda:

    1. June Jamboree stewards [Max]

MD said the Jamboree would be Sunday of 4th week. There will be a bouncy castle, rounders, a bar on Jowett Field, and food. If anyone wants to help organise they should email Max, but the whole committee is also mandated to come and help out for a couple of hours on the day unless they have exams etc. These tasks would include stewarding, watching the bouncy castle for irresponsible bouncing etc.

    1. Library Committee [Isaac]

CT said that IR has an exam when it’s library committee and wondered if anyone wanted to go in his place. But given that IR will be leaving at the end of the year, we should have an ACAF election and then take the elected person to Library Committee. CT said that she liked the way we did Dr Who Co-options. Fourth week committee lunch might be the place for husts. DT said that he would send out the email.

    1. Committee email addresses [Richard]

RM said that committee email addresses are “a bit of a mess”. For example there are three affiliations emails – one of which goes to Chessy. RM will make the new ones and redirect the old ones. We all agreed that we get a lot of spam through those email addresses. Chessy raised the problem that one of a pair is attached to the email. Her and Sam have asked OUSU to send both of them the emails. RM said that the reason was a technical one that he would look into solving.

    1. Welfare Tea [Anna]

AH said that doing welfare every day when they had exams was difficult, and that it would be useful for other people to help out who don’t have exams.

    1. Present and Card for Dani [Max]

MD asked to pass ÂŁ1.50 for the card, and ÂŁ25 for Tesco vouchers so that Dani can buy plants for her garden as a birthday present.

    AOB

    1. Taxi Fund [Nina]

“Since we have been discussing the taxi fund for a while, I think the motion aiming to abolish OUSU's involvement in and financial support of the safety bus scheme is of particular interest to our JCR. Safety bus is a free, student-run door-to-door shuttle service that students of Oxford University and Brookes can call any time during the night when they need to get home. So, essentially, it addresses the same problem as the taxi fund. Given our recent discussions I think Balliol should try to stop this motion. Since I am sick and won't make it to council tonight, maybe someone else could take my place and speak/ vote in Council? You would only have to be in Magdalen Auditorium from 6.30. OUSU is great fun!”

CT explained that the safety bus costs £12,000 a year for OUSU, so they are having a motion to get rid of it. CT thinks that this is probably the correct decision, but she is going to go to OUSU in the case of Nina. Rob pointed out that OUSU are planning on looking into local taxi services to replace the service – essentially a large taxi fund like the service Balliol are attempting. In committee we mandated the three OUSU reps to abolish the Taxi service unless they hear a convincing argument in its favour.

    1. Coffee Machine [Darryl]

The JCR is going to be given a coffee machine from the MCR. Alex Mullan said that he had once read of a coffee machine being suggested for the bar. DBL said that from a financial point of view, Pantry would lose a lot of money to instant coffee. DT said that the grinder is broken. CT suggested putting the machine in Pantry.

    1. Discount Card [Aisha]

Aisha said that quite a few shops have agreed to give a 10% or 15% discount for Balliol students, and the Phoenix Picturehouse would give us 2 for 1 tickets. Richard agreed that this was something that could go on the website.

    1. Gym [Dan]

Dan said that the gym in Jowett doesn’t have a cycling machine and they would like one or two of ours from the main site. Sam Bumby said that people who have paid for the JCR gym are also allowed to use the MCR ones. Max asked if Dan had talked to the Domestic Bursar and the sports captains. The sports reps think that it’s okay, unless some are already broken in which case we could end up with none. It’s unclear whether the College of the JCR are responsible for the gym because of the all the complications with the Domus charge last year.

    1. Building works [Dan]

Dan said that there were further problems with the building work, and that College are being reluctant about giving compensation to current students. Anna Hufton raised the suggestion of lots of students emailing Jo Roadknight to make her aware of their concerns.

    1. Website again [Anna]

Anna Hufton said that the  committee were listed in alphabetical order on the website. She thinks that it would be good if all the welfare people were together. Dan said that he was happy for Richard to “keep tweaking”.

    1. NUS motion [Rob]

Rob said that we should invite reps to speak at the next GM about this motion.Â
