Minutes
- Matters Arising
- CW said that she and CT had spoken to Suzanne, the OUSU representative for women about the āOne Billion Risingā event, though OUSU were not currently planning on doing anything. She also reported that there had been little interest from Balliol JCR about going on a coach, and that she and CT would attempt to coordinate with other JCRs to find interested individuals. They also informed the Committee that they would perhaps bring a motion to the next GM to take the JCR banner to the event.
- JR informed the Committee that he and MR had drafted a letter to the Head Porter to ask about the possibilities of a box for plastic bags. They would keep the Committee updated. AB thanked the Drs WHO for acting as the ānoticeboard police,ā and said the noticeboards were looking exemplary. LF asked if the boards allocated to each officer could be randomised, AB suggested that they liaise with the Drs WHO.
- Entz Committee Cooption [Josh Jones]
- MW said that someone had approached him and JJ to fill the one vacant position on the Entz Committee. The Committee co-opted the remaining positon.
- June Jamboree [Emma Livingston]
- EL informed the Committee that sheād want to make the June Jamboree bigger and better this year, and wanted to discuss it with the Committee. She noted that normally the ball is in Hilary and so the June Jamboree was traditionally in June. However she thought given that the ball this year is in 9th week of Trinity, we could move the June Jamboree to the beginning of Trinity, however understood that there was a heightened risk of bad weather. ET, AYB and TW all argued that it would be fine to have it at the end of Trinity, because itād be fine to have two party events close to one another; and also that the June Jamboree was traditionally an event for finalists. JM said heād prefer it to be at the start of Trinity because the weather was usually better. AH said that the choice was between āscrewing over freshers and screwing over finalistsā however HP disputed this, arguing that freshers could take an afternoon out of prelims revision to attend the event, as everyone needed a break. CT concurred, saying that as both a fresher and a chemist she was fine with the event being at the end of Trinity Term. EL said she wanted to make the Jamboree a bigger deal than last year, essentially she wanted to put more money into it. She felt it would be reasonable to run the event at a loss, as it was a demonstrable example of something āgoodā the JCR does for everyone. She didnāt expect the loss to be greater than Ā£1000 and said that there was some unused money in the accounts, which could be spent; and informed the Committee that she was looking into getting a hog roast for the event. She also proposed ticketing the event, with very cheap tickets available to the entire JCR. HS thought that it was a good idea to make the event bigger, and agreed that it would be acceptable to run the event at a loss. However she thought ticketing was a bad idea, because one of the best things about the event was that people could just drop in for five minutes, if they wanted to. She expressed her concern that making the event ticketed would deter people from coming, and thus wouldnāt be something for the whole JCR to enjoy. EL suggested that ticketing could be done on the door, while AYB said that if the cost of the ticket were battled then people would be more likely to buy one. HP expressed reservations about cost; arguing that if there was a large turnout the cost would increase. It was agreed that EL could go away and continue planning for a June Jamboree at the end of Trinity Term, and would bring a motion to the GM to pass the appropriate money.
- Balliol's Got Talent [Alex Copestake]
- SB informed the Committee that he and AC had organised a charity event āBalliolās Got Talentā, and was hoping to co-ordinate with both the Bar and Pantry, such as charity cocktails. AC encouraged people to get involved. HP agreed that charity cocktails would be a good idea, MW suggested that the cocktails could be sold in the same manner as boptails. AH suggested that the discussion be continued between the Bar Manager, Entz Officers, Charities Officers and Foodie Brothers.
- "DSO Goes Down - Herald the Dawn of Welfare Films" [Alice Beech]
- AYB noted that DSO had traditionally had a monopoly on the Sunday night film showing ā and that she wanted to show some films related to her position. ET said that she didnāt want to tread on the toes of the Entz Officers, as MW said that he and JJ were planning on running film nights. AB suggested that the Entz Officers could set up a booking system whereby Committee members could run film nights. MW said that it would be fine to have consecutive film nights, as the different films would attract different audiences. HP said that we should be careful not too have too many welfare films, and MW and JJ had been mandated to show films. However HS argued that since part of the welfare officerās roles were to raise awareness about the political issues facing their groups and to create a nice and inclusive atmosphere for said group, it could not be claimed that Entz Officers were the only positions with the mandate to show films. It was decided that this would be discussed at welfare subcommittee.
- Rent Banding [Alex Bartram]
- AB brought up that there were some problems with the Rent Banding system proposed last term by Ben Marshall and Max Goplerud, it would have to go to a GM again. He noted that the College were on-board in theory, but in practice were hesitant. He said he personally didnāt know a lot about it, that Ben and Max were still working on it, but that he felt he should share his information with the Committee.
- GM [Alex Bartram]
- AB said that in the light of the issues with quorum at the last EGM, it was important that Officers turned up to GMs, especially when they were to do with important issues like rent negotiations. RM asked whether it would be compulsory for Officers to attend, AB said no; but that there was an electoral obligation, if not necessarily a constitutional one. HS added that if the Committee had a negative attitude towards GMs then it would be likely that the rest of the JCR would see them in a negative light. She noted that some of the people who had come at the last EGM to fill quorum had been surprised at how interesting the meeting had been, and hopefully some would return. She noted that GMs could be interesting, provided people approached them with the right attitude.
- AOB
- EL asked if the subscription to the Oxymoron should be renewed, at a cost of Ā£30 per term. The Committee agreed it should be.
- JJ said he had been emailed by the Magdalen Entz Officers inquiring as to the possibility of another so called āmegabopā at a local discotheque. MW said that he had thought it to be a good idea, and asked the Committee if they thought it was too. They did.
- IR reported that in the light of his last email to the JCR, he had āsauced the saucersā for the upcoming GM.
- The meeting ended.
